View of air traffic from space

Thanks goes to Stan & Kaye Macleod for sending us this. Thanks guys! Happy New Year!!

Subject: View of air traffic from space. Check this out! Watch the Sun set and rise.

View of air traffic from space READ FIRST BEFORE OPENING THE ATTACHMENT. WORLD AIR TRAFFIC 0-24 HRS.VIEW FROM SATELLITE THIS IS MOST AMAZING....
ENJOY. Run time: 2:02

You won't believe this. The yellow dots are airplanes in the sky during a 24 hour period. Stay with the picture. You will see the light of the day moving from the east to the west, as the Earth spins on its axis. Also you will see the aircraft flow of traffic leaving the North American continent and travelling at night to arrive in the UK in the morning. Then you will see the flow changing, leaving the UK in the morning, and flying to the American continent in daylight. It is a 24 hour observation of all of the large aircraft flights in the world, condensed down to about 2 minutes.

From space we look like a bee hive of activity. You could tell it was summer time in the north by the sun's foot print over the planet. You could see that it didn't quite set in the extreme north and it didn't quite rise in the extreme south.

We are taught about the earth's tilt and how it causes summer and winter and have had to imagine just what is going on. With this 24 hour observation of aircraft travel on the earth's surface we get to see the daylight pattern move as well.

note: After viewing this, who in their right mind thinks they can stop terrorism from the skies? You might as well try not taking in the air you breath.

If these guys can learn to get along, why can't we?

The Facts of Community Futures

How appropriate with New Year's fast approaching to look back at the past year(s) and reflect on our community's economic woes. In this regard, Community Futures is deserving of special attention, considering our stagnant (declining) economy and ongoing business closures. Taxes are going up (again) and the cost of utilities is going up as well. The Pass is awash with vacant commercial spaces, and developments such as River Run continue to struggle and/or fail to get off the ground.

During the good times we saw little progress and now with the hard times upon us there seems to be little hope. Which begs the question, what is going on and where has all the money gone? Our community by way of Community Futures has received countless millions of dollars over the years from both our federal and provincial governments, but the community as a whole has gotten little if anything to show for it?

Is this not more of the same of what I have already recently written about on Dean's blog with respect to how the Centre was set up and being run for the benefit of the elite in our community, at our expense? Is not Community Futures more of the same i.e. a personal bank for the well-to-do in our community, to be used by them as they see fit solely for their benefit, but with all taxpayers picking up the tab? Once again, it seems, We get to pay, for them to play.

Over the years, how many budding entrepreneurs and small business people have been denied grants, business loans and help because of systemic greed, cronyism and nepotism running rampant throughout our local institutions?

Western Economic Diversification (a Federal body) with Community Futures offices throughout Western Canada, including our own in Blairmore, seem to be oblivious to what is really going on at the street level. Nor, do they apparently care, as exemplified by the following videos.

The videos below, although dealing primarily with a Community Futures office in B.C. on Vancouver Island, is typical, I think, of a growing economic problem throughout Western Canada, because of how some of them are being (mis)managed solely for the personal benefit of a small elite. In this regard, I feel many of the issues and problems stated here can and do apply to our own Community Futures office in Blairmore.

The facts about Community Futures Development Corporation. A bunch of non-elected people run our local economy through a Federal Incorporated Corporation that is not accountable to anyone.

Western Diversification, a federal program that allows their Community Futures offices to play favourites (nepotism) and as a result is mismanaged and ineffective. Works against the principals of small business. Offices are run for the personal benefit of a small elite.

Where is the transparency? Members of the board are nominated but by who, where and when? "Looks like the bureaucrats get the gold, but small business gets the shaft."

The next three videos show how the bureaucrats can mislead the public when they are in charge of a program which they're suppose to inform the public. How insulting can this be? How can the federal government create good programs like this that they put a lot of effort in designing and managing, yet then allow them to be run so loosey-goosey that it becomes a federal trough for a few selected people?

Canada: "Be Afraid! Be Very Afraid!"

Well now that we have got little baby Jesus out of the way for another year (I say this with sarcasm, as modern day living forces most of us to be hypocrites ie: preaching (desiring) one thing while doing another, 364 days a year... I confess, I feel like a hypocrite right now, being torn between needing (wanting?) to step back from my blog (what's the use?) and what I feel is my purpose and destiny in life at this stage, versus my ever increasing 'forced' role in life... by the state, for the state... in order to put food on the table. Something has got to give, and usually, it is the individual. :-( Any post office jobs out there? I feel like a prime candidate :-) ) it is time again to deal with practical matters.

Today, I received an email from our blogging buddy Jose. Jose sent me a link to an essay that pretty much sums up the past, present and future, for all of us. Much of what it says are my thoughts completely. Read it for yourselves and be Awakened... to today's nightmarish reality.

As such, be warned. It is not a pretty picture. But it is something you need to know (if you don't already?).

Canadians need to be afraid (because as we all know, when America sneezes, we all catch a cold). They need to educate themselves. And then... REVOLT! REVOLT against the machine, and against a future of being 'Wage and Debt Slaves' for the Slave Masters.

An Introspective Look at the Future of America

note: Thanks Jose, for sending us this 'heads up' link.

Good thoughts... good words... good deeds

To all my connoisseurs of good blogging taste. Thank you for following me through 2009, and listening to my rants and raves, diatribes and outpourings of 'justifiable' anger and hostility against the machine, and those who would oppress and enslave us to satisfy their unquenchable and insatiable greed and thirst for power. I'm talking, of course, about those goddamn 'conservatives'. :-)

Who are despoiling the earth, starving the planet and its people, while feeding us BS by way of entertainment masked as news, and news masked as entertainment. The brainwashing is never ending and all encompassing. :-(

Thank god, some of us are still FREE! But remember... those of you like me... "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society." ;-)

For some of us Revolution cannot come soon enough. (In fact, I expect and look forward to it happening every time I do a post. :-)) One day, Canada's Messiah will appear and lead us to the promised land. To Freedom, from fear... of the State!

“When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear their government, there is tyranny."

Anyhow, more on this in the New Year. For now, its Christmas. A time to believe in whatever you choose to believe in. Provided, its geared around Peace, Love and Harmony.

I leave you with the hope you and your loved ones are granted... the Wisdom to have good thoughts... the Love to share good words... and the Power to do good deeds.

Fire destroys Border Building Materials

Sad news for owners, workers and Crowsnest residents. Last night, fire destroyed Border Building Materials. One of our municipality's biggest employers and respected businesses. This couldn't have come at a worst time...

Our hearts go out to all who have been affected by this terrible loss to our community.

UPDATE:

http://www.crowsnestpasspromoter.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2240239

UPDATE (Jan.26): Good news! Border has reopened at the former Westcastle Motors site in Blairmore, as of last week (Jan. 19?). Not sure if this is a temporary move or permanent, but they are back in business, and for everybody concerned this is good news! 2009 ended badly for our community because of the fire at Border, but now 2010 is starting off GREAT!!!... because what was thought lost and dead, has instead, just been reborn elsewhere, in another location, but still very much alife within our community. :-)

Scrooge is coming, and he's ready to 'screw' you and me

Well the Keystone cops are at it again. The guys who can't shoot straight and can't get anything right, are ready to tax us more and more, right in the middle of a recession (depression). Which is exactly what you should not be doing i.e. taxing people more and more when they are down.

After criticizing Dion over a Carbon Tax, Harper has done a back flip, and is now talking about implementing a Carbon Tax that will tax everything and everybody, while going easy on their corporate friends...

Harper won't rule out carbon tax

And Flaherty is threatening to decimate the real estate industry by raising the minimum down payment for home buyers, as well as reducing the amortization period in order to stop some consumers from taking on too much debt, while doing nothing about the predatory practices of banks and credit card companies, and their white collar criminal friends in high places.

Now, in all likelihood, he will be going after the poor and less fortunate in society by cutting programs that aid them and working families...

Flaherty's deficit plan: Take an axe and cut deep

When are people going to wake up to the fact Harper's conservatives are all about helping and abetting corporations, banksters and fraudsters, while screwing you and me?

Life being what it is, one dreams of revenge.

U.K. priest defends shoplifting sermon

CBC News

A priest in England who said in a recent sermon that it was OK for the poor to shoplift, defended his comments Tuesday after facing a firestorm of criticism.

Rev. Tim Jones, told his Anglican congregation in York last Sunday that in times of desperate need, people may be justified in stealing from large chain stores.

In an interview Tuesday with the BBC, Jones said he didn't want his message "misrepresented as a simplistic call for people to shoplift."

He said it was call for society to "no longer to treat its most vulnerable people with indifference and contempt."

Jones, who previously worked as a prison chaplain, said shoplifting was sometimes the only option for poor families and is preferable to prostitution, mugging, or burglary.

"My advice, as a Christian priest, is to shoplift," he said to the congregation, according to the Independent newspaper. "I do not offer such advice because I think that stealing is a good thing, or because I think it is harmless, for it is neither."

Jones asked parishioners not to steal from family stores, but from large national chains and for them to take only what they need.

His statements have drawn the ire of police, retailers, and fellow clergy.

The Archdeacon of York, Richard Seed, released a statement saying the Church of England does not advocate shoplifting or law-breaking in any form. Seed lauded Jones for "raising important issues about the difficulties people face when benefits are not forthcoming, but shoplifting is not the way to overcome these difficulties."

North Yorkshire police and the British Retail Consortium have also condemned Jones's views.

note
: The message from the priest is clear, society must "no longer to treat its most vulnerable people with indifference and contempt."

Irwin, Stelmach, Harper, do you 'conservatives' hear this man's cry on behalf of the little people? Do you even care? If so, then do something!

If not, then the day will come when the people will rise up and judge you, and you will pay for your GREED, failed policies and ideology, and for your callous indifference to the suffering of those less fortunate than yourselves.

British priest urges congregation to shoplift

Rev. Tim Jones has been slammed following his Nativity sermon advising people to shoplift rather than turning to prostitution.
__________________________________________________

Canwest News Service

LONDON -- A British Anglican priest is facing criticism following a controversial sermon where he advises his congregation to shoplift, according to a report from The Daily Mail.

Rev. Tim Jones, 41, told his followers that stealing from large chain stores is sometimes the best option for the poor. He said it is better for people to steal than resort to prostitution, mugging or burglary.

He also said that it is better to steal from large, national businesses rather than small businesses.
The Daily Mail reported that Rev. Jones claims his sermon at St. Lawrence Church in York did not violate the Bible commandment "Thou shalt not steal" because God's love for the poor is more important than the property rights of the rich.

"Let my words not be misrepresented as a simplistic call for people to shoplift," Rev. Jones was quoted. "This is a call for our society to no longer treat its most vulnerable people with indifference and contempt."

The sermon has drawn a fierce reaction from police, retailers and politicians in Britain.

A spokesman from the North Yorkshire Police called the sermon highly irresponsible and encouraged those in difficult circumstances to seek government support.

A spokesman for the British Retail Consortium told The Daily Mail that stealing from big stores was just as wrong as stealing from small stores, and also encouraged use of the welfare system.

British Tory MP Anne McIntosh, who has campaigned for stronger sentences for shoplifters, condemned the sermon. She said shoplifting was a crime against both the local community and society.

Even Rev. Jones's own church leaders distanced themselves from the comments.

"The Church of England does not advise anyone to shoplift, or break the law in any way," Ven. Richard Seed, Archdeacon of York, told Metro news.

note: Class Warfare anyone? Take from the Rich and give to the Poor? Now there is a concept! No wonder Church & State came out so vehemently to denounce this priest. Their very foundation is threatened.

They've created a modern culture of Corporations, Consumerism and GREED, but now find they cannot provide the jobs and means for the masses to consume what is offered, but can no longer be paid for. While at the same time Media continues to flaunt the goods and corporations continue to entice and titillate people to buy. There is a major disconnect here. Because capitalism and consumerism can only work when people have jobs, and money. When there are no more jobs and money, and people still want - and need - the goods, then something has got to give.

Quite logically then, it should be the rich that do the giving, don't you think? Since they have been the biggest beneficiaries from a system they've designed to exploit you and me, for their benefit.

I mean, after all, white collar criminals have been (and continue) having a free ride at our expense. Don't we get to have a free ride at their expense, too? Aren't we a democratic society? Where is it written, that only the rich can steal?

Following the priest's lead, if people are going to steal, let them steal from the rich corporations (who have been stealing from us) and not prostitute themselves, or steal from one another.

"This is a call for our society to no longer treat its most vulnerable people with indifference and contempt." Otherwise, Class Warfare will certainly be the end result.

"The Law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich, as well as the poor, to sleep under the bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread."

True Story About Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer

A man named Bob May, depressed and brokenhearted, stared out his drafty apartment window into the chilling December night.

His 4-year-old daughter Barbara sat on his lap quietly sobbing. Bob's wife, Evelyn, was dying of cancer. Little Barbara couldn't understand why her mommy could never come home. Barbara looked up into her dad's eyes and asked, "Why isn't Mommy just like everybody else's Mommy?" Bob's jaw tightened and his eyes welled with tears. Her question brought waves of grief, but also of anger. It had been the story of Bob's life. Life always had to be different for Bob.

Small when he was a kid, Bob was often bullied by other boys. He was too little at the time to compete in sports. He was often called names he'd rather not remember. From childhood, Bob was different and never seemed to fit in. Bob did complete college, married his loving wife and was grateful to get his job as a copywriter at Montgomery Ward during the Great Depression. Then he was blessed with his little girl. But it was all short-lived. Evelyn's bout with cancer stripped them of all their savings and now Bob and his daughter were forced to live in a two-room apartment in the Chicago slums. Evelyn died just days before Christmas in 1938.

Bob struggled to give hope to his child, for whom he couldn't even afford to buy a Christmas gift. But if he couldn't buy a gift, he was determined a make one, a storybook! Bob had created an animal character in his own mind and told the animal's story to little Barbara to give her comfort and hope. Again and again Bob told the story, embellishing it more with each telling. Who was the character? What was the story all about? The story Bob May created was his own autobiography in fable form. The character he created was a misfit outcast like he was. The name of the character? A little reindeer named "Rudolph", with a big shiny nose. Bob finished the book just in time to give it to his little girl on Christmas Day. But the story doesn't end there.

The general manager of Montgomery Ward caught wind of the little storybook and offered Bob May a nominal fee to purchase the rights to print the book. Wards went on to print, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and distribute it to children visiting Santa Claus in their stores. By 1946 Wards had printed and distributed more than six million copies of Rudolph. That same year, a major publisher wanted to purchase the rights from Wards to print an updated version of the book. In an unprecedented gesture of kindness, the CEO of Wards returned all rights back to Bob May. The book became a best seller. Many toy and marketing deals followed and Bob May, now remarried with a growing family, became wealthy from the story he created to comfort his grieving daughter. But the story doesn't end there either.

Bob's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, made a song adaptation to Rudolph. Though the song was turned down by such popular vocalists as Bing Crosby and Dinah Shore , it was recorded by the singing cowboy, Gene Autry. "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was released in 1949 and became a phenomenal success, selling more records than any other Christmas song, with the exception of "White Christmas."

The gift of love that Bob May created for his daughter so long ago kept on returning back to bless him again and again. And Bob May learned the lesson, just like his dear friend Rudolph, that being different isn't so bad. In fact, being different can be a blessing.

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2009

We manifest in love our understanding of the unity of our being with others, and in so doing we make our life greater. The more we love, the wider, larger, and more joyful our life becomes.

There is no past and no future; no one has ever entered those two imaginary kingdoms. There is only the present. Do not worry about the future, because there is no future. Live in the present, and if your present is good, then it is good forever.

If you have difficult times, if you suffer from the loss of loved ones or from fears about the future, remember that life exists only in the present and direct all your thoughts and memories to this present. All your anguish about the past and your worries about the future will disappear, and you will feel freedom and happiness.

Pro-Democracy Movement: Time for Canadians to stand up, and take back our country

The Disaffected Lib is a political blog site that I have recently begun to follow, and I am glad I do, because much of what is said there (that I have read) is stuff I totally agree with. Including, today's suggestion that Canadians form our own Pro-Democracy Movement, as put forth in the post: Just what Canada needs - A "Pro-Democracy Movement", and by Susan Riley, from the Ottawa Citizen, in her excellent article: Let the games end.

Based on my own experience in the federal Alberta riding of Macleod, I believe the Liberal Party of Canada has been infected (like a cancer) and as such is being destroyed from within by official political blogging communities like Liblogs, and from Liberal riding associations, who appear to have been bought and are in the back pockets of the CPC.

With the above in mind, I believe a Pro-Democracy Movement is not only in order but something desperately needed to save our country from 'economic strangulation', and 'social disintegration'. We are being sold out and lead down a dangerous path by Harper and the conservatives. Therefore, doing nothing is not an option. Something must be done! The following quote makes this quite clear:

"We hear often there is no use in working to improve our life, to fight evil, or to establish justice, because progress will occur by itself. Imagine that a boat floats along a river. Imagine that those who have sat by the oars and rowed tirelessly have stopped and gone ashore; and that travelers who remain in the boat do not bother to take up the oars and push the boat further, but think that it will travel by itself, as before, into the future."

All of us must stand and deliver, if we are to take back our country... and save it. A 'Pro-Democracy Movement' sounds like just the ticket to get us there.

All that is human must retrograde if it does not advance.

Governments big on waste, easy on white collar crime, hard on you and me

Doctor's $3.5M deal avoids fraud trial

... A Toronto doctor has avoided trial for fraud and money laundering after agreeing to repay $3.5 million he wrongfully billed taxpayers.

... The deal with prosecutors allowed Dr. Lorne Sokol to plead guilty to the lesser offence of contravening Ontario's Health Insurance Act, which carries a maximum fine of $25,000.

Doctor's $3.5M deal avoids fraud trial

note: Because of our two-tiered justice system of 'justice for the rich, and the law for the poor' this doctor who broke the law and stole millions, will never see the inside of a prison cell. Obviously, our federal 'conservative' government encourages and supports white collar crime, while at the same time trying to pass Bills (supported by these type of white collar criminals) that throw more ordinary people in jail (including our kids), and for longer periods of time.

These are the seeds that get planted that lead to Class Warfare.

Cornwall sex abuse inquiry

... At $53 million, Ontario's four-year public probe into child abuse in Cornwall cost more than the province's last three public inquiries combined.

... The inquiry's more than $50-million price tag included $21 million in legal fees, $3.5 million in counselling costs and $308,054 in Crown expenditures.

... Cornwall inquiry commissioner G. Normand Glaude released a 1,600-plus page report Tuesday that left the sensational allegations that fuelled the inquiry unresolved.

Ont. premier questions cost of Cornwall sex abuse inquiry

note: It seems, all levels of government have plenty of money to waste on the greedy (politicians, judges, lawyers, doctors (i.e. professionals), but little to nothing for the needy.

A shake up of our institutions needs to take place from the top to the bottom... and I say, it can't come soon enough! Revolution, anyone?

Democracy's founding virtues are freedom and equality, so greed without restraint, producing great inequalities, becomes an undemocratic force.

The plight of West Papua

I got an email today from a guy in Australia who is presently doing his part in helping another guy who is living in exile in the states, who claims West Papua was 'traded' illegally to Indonesia for the benefit of a corporation, wanting their rich mineral resources.

The plight of West Papua

People may remember Indonesia did the same thing to the East Timorese - for their oil - that resulted in hundreds of thousands of them being killed.

Promote Freedom, Democracy, and Human Rights by giving your attention to this matter and hopefully, become enlightened and empowered to do your part in ending colonial rape of this guy's beloved nation.

Conservative boycott shuts down Afghan detainee hearing

Steven Chase
Ottawa —
The Globe and Mail

The Harper government has effectively shuttered a parliamentary committee probing the treatment of suspects rounded up by Canadian soldiers and handed over to Afghan interrogators.

The fact that all Conservatives MPs boycotted today's meeting means the Commons special committee cannot officially meet and investigate allegations that detainees were transferred to torture at the hands of Afghan's notorious intelligence service.

At least one government MP must be present for meeting and the absence of all Tory MPs prevents it.

The Tories said there’s no urgency to hold more hearings before Christmas.

“It’s not the time to be having meetings that are implying, intentioned or not, that Canadians are somehow guilty of war crimes,” Laurie Hawn, the parliamentary secretary for the Defence Minister, said on CTV’s Power Play after the aborted meeting.

The Conservatives had beaten back calls for a public inquiry into Afghan detainees by saying the matter should instead be handled by the special committee.

Today's boycott comes days after the Harper government also defied an extremely rare Commons motion that has the force of a subpoena and calls on them to release confidential records on detainees.

It also comes less than a week after the departing head of a separate inquiry into detainees fired a salvo at the Tories.

Peter Tinsley, the outgoing head of a commission probing the Afghan detainee controversy said Friday that Ottawa's refusal to extend his term so he could finish the job contributes to a “chilling effect” on cabinet-appointed watchdogs charged with keeping government accountable.

Mr. Tinsley's chairmanship of the Military Police Complaints Commission expired December 11.

The Tories are fighting opposition attempts to follow the paper trail surrounding detainees after stunning military revelations last Wednesday that a Canadian-captured detainee was abused in June, 2006, after being handed over to the Afghans, contrary to Tory government assurances that there was no evidence prisoners were tortured.

The long-simmering issue was reignited in mid-November when diplomat Richard Colvin told a Parliamentary committee that all detainees captured by Canadians were likely tortured after being transferred to Afghan hands in 2006 and early 2007.

The Harper government responded with attacks on Mr. Colvin's credibility, an onslaught that last week brought a letter of protest from former ambassadors.

Speaking to reporters on Dec. 11, Mr. Tinsley said it was unprecedented for the Harper government to forgo reappointment during a significant inquiry. He said the interruption will hurt the probe's ability to do its job.

The Tories said they plan to appoint a new chair soon, but critics have raised concerns Mr. Tinsley's successor will not be as enthusiastic to press ahead.

The commission has run into a string of roadblocks federal lawyers have used to delay and severely limit the scope of its probe.

Mr. Tinsley suggested a bigger problem is the Harper government's attitude to the heads of watchdog agencies, who are appointed on the advice of cabinet. He cited the example of Linda Keen, the former head of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, who was fired in 2008.

“Lack of co-operation by the government, or resistance [to] the roles of administrative tribunals, and the effect on the [cabinet] appointees, can have nothing but a … chilling effect across the field.”

Mr. Tinsley said the fear is that watchdog chairs could be cowed by “an environment where the government of the day sends signals that if you don't guess right what the government of the day wants” there will be consequences.

Rick Casson, the Tory chair of the Commons committee on Afghanistan, could not be immediately reached for comment.

Its Official, Canada will remain a safe haven for Banksters and Fraudsters

Well, Canada's Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty, announced today that he will not be joining the EU's efforts to curtail GREED by taxing those in the banking sector, who continue to receive bonuses that most people consider obscene.

Flaherty says bank bonuses must comply with rules, but rejects new tax

Britain, France, Germany back new taxes on bank bonuses

In addition, Robert Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, continues to talk tough on crime (the blue collar type) but does little to nothing on white collar crime. He wants to label our kids 'criminals', and throw the book at them and send them to penitentiaries with long prison terms, while going easy on his white collar 'friends', by sending them instead to 'country club' prisons, with slap on the wrist sentences. In other words, he and his conservative cohorts are strong proponents for a two-tiered justice system in Canada. One that provides 'justice for the rich, and the law for the poor'. I say to hell with that!! If you are going to hang the little crooks, we want to see the big crooks hang to!

Our country is being transformed by Harper's conservatives, into those who have and those who don't. With the don'ts out numbering the haves, but with the haves keeping everyone in line by utilizing their Taser toting goons, who lately seem to be dishing out state sponsored torture and terrorism on our populace, on an ever more frequent basis.

The message from the government is clear. Canada will remain a safe haven for banksters and fraudsters, who can continue ripping our citizens off with impunity... and with our conservative government's blessings.

Corruption is merely a nasty word for the autumn of a people.

Time to disband the RCMP, as they and their masters are corrupt to the core

RCMP needs overhaul

Calgary Herald

Paul Kennedy, the outgoing head of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP, believes his scathing report into the videotaped death of a Polish immigrant will change the way Canadians view the Mounties. He's being generous. The RCMP can blame their damaged reputation on nothing more than the actions of some of their own members, aided by a long culture of coverup.

More denials won't restore credibility to Canada's Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who are at a pivotal moment in their long and storied history. Truth and responsibility, however, might prove the right mix of stain remover. The symbolic red surge has been sullied by the force's dirty laundry, with one scandal after another and a series of inquiries and reports, some of which have never been acted upon.

The latest indictment came this week from Kennedy, who documented a litany of mistakes made by the four officers involved in the death of Robert Dziekanski, at the Vancouver airport. They deployed their Tasers too quickly, seconds after arriving, five times over a 31-second period, he reported. They also made no attempt to resolve the situation without violence.

The whole thing smells of a big coverup. (The Crown will not be laying criminal charges against the officers, one of whom, Monty Robinson, was recently charged with attempting to obstruct justice.)

The report confirms what most Canadians already knew, thanks to a citizen video tape of Dziekanski's final moments.

Witness Paul Pritchard, 27, is the real hero in this tragedy. Without his video, it's likely the truth would never have surfaced, or the official record corrected. The public received "erroneous information" that was fed to the media at the time of Dziekanski's death, and deliberately not corrected for another 14 months.

It's an understatement when Kennedy says the way the force responded to its mishandling of Dziekanski's death will "represent a defining moment in the history of the RCMP."

The manner in which the RCMP responds to my report and that of Justice (Thomas) Braidwood to follow will have a profound impact on how the iconic institution is viewed by Canadians," wrote Kennedy.

So far, the response has been more of the same, with RCMP Commissioner William Elliott writing a letter saying he will respond later. His silence, quite frankly, is stunning. Dziekanski died on Oct. 14, 2007. You'd think he could have worked out a statement by now.

The federal government responded no better, telling Kennedy his term is up, and he will not be reappointed after four years in the job. During that time, Kennedy has persistently pushed the federal government to create an independent watchdog with real teeth, and for Mounties to stop investigating themselves, two steps this paper has long advocated.

Dziekanski's death is a tragedy, but if it leads to real reform of the RCMP, he will not have died in vain. Change is needed at the highest level before Canadians can forgive or forget the recent history of the RCMP. Accountability, truth and transparency are the only hope of restoring honour to this once-great institution.

-------------------------------------

note: The RCMP have been out of control for some time. For years now, it has been one scandal after another along with a series of inquiries and reports that clearly show a long culture of coverup after coverup, and a penchant for resorting to violence all too frequently, when attempting to resolve situations. The bodies keep piling up.

They are not what they used to be and instead have been turned into the modern day equivalent of Taser toting Gestapo police. A corrupt conservative government and cabinet has resulted in a corrupt national police force. State violence has become the norm in Canada today. That needs to change!

It is time the RCMP were broken up and Regional policing with civilian oversite take their place.

The country had fallen into a state of moral putrefaction, with corruption running rampant throughout the government ranks.

Harper, we need jobs too!

Obama calls for $200B for jobs
CBC News

U.S. President Barack Obama is proposing increased stimulus spending aimed at job creation.
He asked Congress on Tuesday to approve a three-part program, much of it aimed at small business.

Obama said staggering job losses mean the country must continue to "spend our way out of this recession" with a round of new incentives. The U.S. unemployment rate is 10 per cent.

His program includes a one-year elimination of capital gains taxes, deductions for up to $250,000 in investment and increased deductions for capital spending, all aimed at small firms.
The program would also provide tax incentives for firms that create jobs and easier terms for borrowing.

Obama also called for increased spending on roads, bridges, and other infrastructure and incentives for homeowners who retrofit their properties to use clean energy or become more energy efficient.

Obama wants to fund the initiatives with $200 billion in unused funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program. TARP was set up in 2008 to shore up the balance sheets of banks and mortgage lenders.

Obama said it is a "false choice" to claim that the government must pick between paying down the deficit and investing in economic growth. He said spending in the short-term to create new jobs will help reduce the deficit over the long-term.

note: Harper seems to follow Obama's lead on everything, including climate change. Maybe, since he is such a good follower, he can follow Obama's lead on job creation too? Lord knows, there are many in this country who could use one... including me. Or, does he think we are all "no-good bastards", too?

River Run 'Still a Go', says Bill Bradley

River Run still progressing, says Bradley
Developers are restructuring debt to attempt to move forward
NATHEN GALLAGHER
Pass Herald Reporter

There is still a great deal of work to be done, but Bill Bradley, with the Bridgecreek Development Corporation, says that River Run is still a go and that they are encouraged that the future is looking clearer.

Currently, says Bradley, the company is in the process of restructuring its debt with its different investor groups, so that they can move ahead to seek bank financing and new sources of private investment. There are four main investor groups, he says, which together represent approximately 50 percent ownership of the River Run project.

Bradley told the Pass Herald that they have successfully restructured their obligation to one of the four groups, and hopes to have a decision from one of the others within the next week. They have had extensive meetings with the final two groups, he says, and will meet with them again in January to continue working toward a solution.

Once the restructuring is complete, he says, "We'll have the time and ability to bank-finance River Run." In addition, they are pursuing additional private financing to move forward. "We're encouraged that the sources of funding are looking promising. I think we've made significant progress in that regard."

While they are working to sort out the financial end of things, they are also sorting out new plans for the 52-acre property in Blairmore, where they still intend to see the full scope of the project realized. Bradley says that they are entering a business relationship with Viceroy Homes, a Vancouver-based international home-building company, to have them build all of the homes on River Run.

"They're a high quality firm," says Bradley. "That's going to be significant for the Pass.

"They are still trying to decide what to do with the sales centre on 129th Street in Blairmore, which has been sporadically staffed and which Bradley says has failed to build the sort of interest locally that they hoped for. Bradley says that people appear to want a full show home instead, and they plan to start building those show homes on the property in the first half of 2010.

In addition, he says, they are once again in negotiations with a large hotel chain to re-include a hotel, conference centre, and indoor pool on the property. That plan was shelved after the planned Raddison hotel fell through, but Bradley says they are now again in the design phase for that project.

"River Run is definitely a go," he says. "We haven't walked away. We're not quitters. The whole mood of the investment market, the whole market in general, has shifted and is much more positive.

"Bradley says that they are aware of the need to prove themselves in the community. The nature of projects such as this, he says, is that they take time, but they still see River Run as a big part of the future in the Crowsnest Pass.

Burglar Alarm

We have the standard 6 ft. fence in the backyard, and a few months ago I heard about burglaries increasing dramatically in the entire city. To make sure this never happened to me, I got an electric fence and ran a single wire along the top of the fence.

Actually, I got the biggest cattle charger Tractor Supply had, made for 26 miles of fence. I then used an 8 ft. long ground rod, and drove it 7.5 feet into the ground. The ground rod is the key, with the more you have in the ground, the better the fence works.

One day I'm mowing the back yard with my cheapo Wal-Mart 6 hp big wheel push mower. The hot wire is broken and laying out in the yard. I knew for a fact that I unplugged the charger. I pushed the mower around the wire and reached down to grab it, to throw it out of the way. It seems as though I hadn't remembered to unplug it after all.

Now I'm standing there, I've got the running lawnmower in my right hand and the 1.7 giga-volt fence wire in the other hand. Keep in mind the charger is about the size of a marine battery and has a picture of an upside down cow on fire on the cover.

Time stood still.

The first thing I notice is my pecker trying to climb up the front side of my body. My ears curled downwards and I could feel the lawnmower ignition firing in the backside of my brain. Every time that Briggs & Stratton rolled over, I could feel the spark in my head. I was literally at one with the engine. It seems as though the fence charger and the piece of shit lawnmower were fighting over who would control my electrical impulses.

Science says you cannot crap, pee, and vomit at the same time. I beg to differ. Not only did I do all three at once, but my bowels emptied 3 different times in less than half of a second.. It was a Matrix kind of bowel movement, where time is creeping along and you're all leaned back and BAM BAM BAM you just crap your pants 3 times. It seemed like there were minutes in between but in reality it was so close together it was like exhaust pulses from a big block Chevy turning 8 grand.

At this point I'm about 30 minutes (maybe 2 seconds) into holding onto the fence wire. My hand is wrapped around the wire palm down so I can't let go. I grew up on a farm so I know all about electric fences.....but Dad always had those pieces of shit chargers made by International or whoever that were like 9 volts and just kinda tickled. This one I could not let go of. The 8 foot long ground rod is now accepting signals from me through the permadamp Ark-La-Tex river bottom soil. At this point I'm thinking I'm going to have to just man up and take it, until the lawnmower runs out of gas.

Damn!, I think, as I remember I just filled the tank! Now the lawnmower is starting to run rough. It has settled into a loping run pattern as if it had some kind of big lawnmower race cam in it. Covered in poop, pee, and with my vomit on my chest I think 'Oh God please die.... Pleeeeaze die'. But nooooo, it settles into the rough lumpy cam idle nicely and remains there, like a big bore roller cam EFI motor waiting for the go command from its owner's right foot.

So here I am in the middle of July, 104 degrees, 80% humidity, standing in my own backyard, begging God to kill me. God did not take me that day.....he left me there covered in my own fluids to writhe in the misery my own stupidity had created..

I honestly don't know how I got loose from the wire...I woke up laying on the ground hours later. The lawnmower was beside me, out of gas. It was later on in the day and I was sunburned.

There were two large dead grass spots where I had been standing, and then another long skinny dead spot where the wire had laid while I was on the ground still holding on to it. I assume I finally had a seizure and in the resulting thrashing had somehow let go of the wire..

Upon waking from my electrically induced sleep I realized a few things:
  1. Three of my teeth seem to have melted.
  2. I now have cramps in the bottoms of my feet and my right butt cheek (not the left, just the right).
  3. Poop, pee, and vomit when all mixed together, do not smell as bad as you might think.
  4. My left eye will not open.
  5. My right eye will not close.
  6. The lawnmower runs like a sumbitch now. Seriously! I think our little session cleared out some carbon fouling or something, because it was better than new after that.
  7. My nuts are still smaller than average yet they are almost a foot long.
  8. I can turn on the TV in the game room by farting while thinking of the number 4 (still don't understand this???)..

That day changed my life. I now have a newfound respect for things.. I appreciate the little things more, and now I always triple check to make sure the fence is unplugged before I mow.

The good news, is that if a burglar does try to come over the fence, I can clearly visualize what my security system will do to him, and THAT gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling all over, which also reminds me to triple check before I mow.

note: Thanks for this Bubba! It's a good one. lol! :-)

It's the economy, stupid!

CBC News

Economy tops list of voters' concerns: poll

While world leaders gear up for the Copenhagen climate change conference, Canadians are choosing the economy over the environment as the issue that concerns them most, a new EKOS poll released exclusively to the CBC suggests.

In the poll, which was based on questions and topics submitted by viewers of the CBC's Power & Politics with Evan Solomon, Canadians were asked which of the following should be the most important issue for the next federal election:

  • Social issues like health and education.
  • Issues related to the economy, like economic growth and employment.
  • Fiscal issues like taxes and debt.
  • Climate change and the environment.
  • None of the above.
About 31 per cent of those polled said the economy topped their list of issues, followed by 27 per cent choosing social issues. Climate change and the environment came in third (18.4 per cent), slightly ahead of fiscal issues (17.8 per cent).

Conservative Party supporters (44 per cent) were more likely than supporters of other parties to put the economy at the top of the list, as were men and those aged 45 to 64.

Those who support the NDP (34 per cent) and the Bloc Québécois (34 per cent) were more likely to say social issues were most important, as were women (36 per cent).

Mixed opinions

Canadians polled were mixed on whether they thought the federal government’s record on the environment had an impact on Canada’s international reputation.

Forty per cent felt it has had a negative impact, while an almost equal proportion (37 per cent) said it had no impact, with older people more likely to say Canada's policies have hurt the country's reputation.

Around 44 per cent of those polled aged 65 and over said the government's environmental record had a negative impact, compared with 43 per cent of those in the 25-44 age group, who were mostly like to say it had no effect.

While the environment ranked much lower than the economy and social issues, nearly a third polled said the government's record on the environment is very important on their voting decisions. About 39 per cent said it was somewhat important.

Supporters of the Liberal (42 per cent), Bloc (41 per cent) and the Green (45 per cent) parties and university educated (36 per cent) were more likely than others to say the issue is very important in their voting decisions.

The survey of 2,412 people was conducted by telephone between Nov. 25 and Dec. 1 and is deemed to have a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points, 19 times out of 20. Both landline and cellphone users were included.

Afghan scandal sullies Canada

Crowsnest Pass Promoter

Canada has long been admired around the globe as a nation of high ethics, human rights and respect for law.

But Canada's sterling reputation is being seriously degraded by the spreading scandal over involvement in torture in the increasingly sordid Afghan conflict.

All Canadians should thank the courageous diplomat, Richard Colvin, who did the right and honourable thing by exposing the government's very dirty Afghan secret.

Emulating the Bush administration, senior government officials and military officers in Ottawa closed ranks, stoutly denying any Afghan scumbags were tortured.

They are either amazingly ignorant or deceiving the nation.

To understand the roots of this ugly business, we must go back to the 1980s.

The Soviet intelligence service, KGB, created the Afghan Communist secret police agency, known as KhAD. Its mission was to liquidate or terrorize all suspected or real anti-Communists and opponents of Soviet occupation. Most prisoners arrested by KhAD were subjected to frightful, sadistic torture, particularly at Kabul's dreaded Pul-e-Charkhi Prison.

Prisoners were buried alive by bulldozers. Others were electrocuted, beaten to death, castrated and blinded.

Some 27,000-30,000 political prisoners were killed at Pul-e-Charkhi by KhAD.

Torture centres also existed in all other major cities.

The Soviets (who withdrew in 1989) and Afghan Communists killed more than one million Afghans.

By 1995, the anti-Communist Pashtun religious movement, the Taliban, backed by Pakistan and the Gulf Arabs, had driven the Communists from most of Afghanistan. The Afghan Communists retreated to the far north, and became part of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance. Ethnic Tajiks and Uzbeks, many of whom collaborated with the Soviet occupation in the 1980s, dominated the Alliance.

The U.S. invaded Afghanistan in 2001, using Russian-armed Northern Alliance soldiers to overthrow the Taliban, and install Hamid Karzai as figurehead president. Real power in Kabul was held by the Northern Alliance.

Two of its strongest figures were pro-Soviet Uzbek warlord Rashid Dostum, and Tajik general Mohammed Fahim -- KhAD's former chief.

Both have close links to Russian intelligence.

After 30 years of civil war, the minority Tajiks and Uzbeks had become blood enemies of the Pashtuns, Afghanistan's majority. Most Taliban are Pashtun.

Fahim and the Tajik-Uzbek-Communist Northern Alliance took over the revived secret police, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) and the prison system. In short order, the KhAD's old torturers were back in business.

Pashtun prisoners captured by Canadian forces were routinely handed to the NDS-KhAD. There were many reports of brutal torture and executions.

Today, Fahim is officially Karzai's No. 2. But as commander of the Tajik-Uzbek militia and secret police, Fahim is the Afghan regime's most powerful figure and strongman.

Every child in Afghanistan knows this. But somehow, Canada's see-no-evil/hear-no-evil generals and civilian officials claim they were sweetly unaware Afghan prisons were being run as torture centres by the revitalized Communists.

Amnesty International and the Red Cross warned Ottawa that prisoners Canada was handing to the Afghan government faced torture -- and worse. The U.S. State Department repeatedly warned of widespread torture in Afghan prisons, including "pulling out fingernails, burnings ... beatings ... sexual humiliations, sodomy" and rape of children. So did the UN.

Canada should have run its own prisoner camps under the proper rules of war.

Yet Canada kept handing prisoners to the Afghan NDS.

Ottawa's disgraceful fig leaf: A memo from Afghan officials promising not to torture captives.

Now we see military men and high government officials trying to bluff away what seem to be some serious misdeeds. A disgusting spectacle that deeply shames and sullies this good nation.

Crowsnest 'Media Polls' are in

Well, the polls have just closed and the results are in...

Which media source do you trust 'the most'
CJPR 0 (0%)
Crowsnest Promoter 12 (54%)
Pass Herald 3 (13%)
none of the above... 7 (31%)

Which media source do you trust 'the least'?
CJPR 1 (4%)
Crowsnest Promoter 2 (9%)
Pass Herald 17 (77%)
none of the above... 2 (9%)

On the first poll, what is surprising is not that the Crowsnest Promoter won hands-down when compared with the others, but that almost 1/3 of respondents chose 'none of the above...' with respect to trusting their local media.

That result is staggering! It clearly shows that for the most part we are ill served in this community by our local media, and that they definitely have a public relations 'image' problem. I suggest, due to their reporting being perceived as biased and prejudiced on the one hand, and/or censored (non reporting of news (issues)) on the other.

This lack of professionalism exacerbates the fragmentation of our civil society, which I believe is one of the major contributing root cause's of our community's stagnation and decline... besides its leadership, of course.

Now, the second poll... Well, the results speak for themselves... and goes to what I said above.

The greater the ignorance the greater the dogmatism.
