Over the holidays I had the chance and good fortune to read a couple of really good books on modern living, life and reality. Chris Hedges book "Empire of Illusion" lead me to another titled "The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Events in America", by Daniel Boorstin. Both books have been an eye-opener to how society has transformed itself in modern times from being an active traveler to one of passive tourist. Pseudo-events and images have flooded our consciousness to the point we no longer know what is real anymore? Reality has become a blur.
America's religion today is entertainment. Our culture today in Canada is no longer Canadian, it is American. Like Americans we no longer know... or maybe even care (for some)... what is real, or what is fake.
Which brings me to a recent Letter to the Editor in our local papers. ... His contribution to this community was immense.
I don't know about you, but I just can't live a lie. What an insult to my and everyone else's intelligence to portray the opposite of what is true in fact and deed. An illusion, an image of the untrue.
Is it any wonder this community cannot go forward when it continues in its ways much like what we did in the days of Emperor Pic when everyone knew what he was up to but with a conspiratorial wink to one another turned a blind eye. Much as what the writer of this letter (on behalf of our local establishment), I suggest, is attempting to do by trying to portray this individual as a great benefactor to our community when the reality is he was a disaster in all areas of his life: personally, professionally, and most importantly for our municipality, as a politician.
To say otherwise is a lie, which I personally will not stand by and let others attempt to create an image of reality which I know from personal experience to be false. An illusion, a fantasy, and as such, the furthest thing from the truth. Others may stay quite but I certaintly won't. For I am neither a hypocrite nor a phoney.
If this community ever hopes to move forward, then it must deal with reality as it is and stop living in a dream world of illusions... and false messiahs. As it has been said, the truth shall set you free.
Speak the truth, but leave immediately after.

Hi John,
You got this one perfectly correct, recognizing reality!!!
Again, about our Community Futures, our local politicians say they have nothing to do with the elections of the CFDC in a letter from the Manager of the Regional District of Mount Waddington. The past Chair of the Regional District says that they are appointed by Western Economic Diversification (WED). WED says that they have nothing to do with the election of CFDC. You can talk to the Chair or the Manager for information .They both say to talk to the Lawyer that advises them. The Lawyer doesn't want to talk to us. Incorporations Canada says they have to be elected by the members at large. If they don't comply, take them to court. A Democratic Society full of Lawyers and Liars is a long way from reality.
In French we call that "HORSE SHIT" when everyone in power has a different story for the same subject to mislead the public.
Thank you. Many residents here feel insulted and isolated. We look for someone to throw stones on our behalf.
try and get a copy of deer hunting with jesus by joe bageant
if you extrapolate his observations in the states into canada
how we are where we are makes a lot more sence
he calls it living in the hallucination
the perception of reality by others
and even myself
only makes sence to me
if you consider it in the same way
a psychologist would interpret a Rorschach inkblot test
everyone takes in the big (ink blot) picture
and then sees what they want to see
add in you have been lied to since you were born to complicate what your looking for
and the lies make the delusions comfortable and familiar
and a confrontation of "the truth" will not be freeing
rather if you get that far
you will feel paranoid and isolated
and surrounded by decision makers and others incapable of discerning the nature of any situation, dangerous in their responses to problems and given to their own personal agendas recklessly defending their personal position of power and wealth or societal position
get a copy of deer hunting to find out how and why
those abused and destroyed by them defend them to the death
Fred,
Reason gone mad is what we are dealing with here. Bureaucracy stuck on structure, rather than reality, morality and common sense. Round and round they go hoping to tire you out until you get fed up and give up. But with you Fred there is no giving up. And sooner or later, like in Berlin, the walls they will be comin down thanks in part to your efforts.
Anon @1:45
Thank you. Maybe with some luck I might yet break a window or two... and let in some fresh air.

I will look into the book and author you mentioned. Thank you for for that and for your very astute and indepth comments.
Interestingly, I am presently reading 'Voltaire's Bastards' by John Ralston Saul which deals with the same subject matter. I'm half way through and can't say enough already about how great this book is in telling us where we are and how we got here. Excellent read! If you haven't read it yet, check it out and I'm sure you will agree. Although on the wordy side at almost 600 pages, it is a must read for those who want to open their minds to a different reality from the one we have all been brainwashed with over the years, as you have already alluded too.
What exactly was the past mayor up to? Did he somehow line his pockets with ill deeds? And why would the locals walk around with a consirical wink? Please explain to me what was (is) going on?
It's not that I don't believe it happened, it's just that I don't know what exactly happened?
Everything seemed so veiled, albeit thinly...the never ending support of crooked real estate developers with no questions asked...the loss of his physicians licence (with no explaination)...and ultimately his death right after his retirement...sounds like things movies are made of. Was is death caused by natural causes?, stress? guilt? Please enlighten me.
Anon @3:53
I won't be drawn-in to speaking ill or bad of the dead, especially as this is not what the intent of this post is about.
The purpose of this post is to draw attention to the fact that it serves no useful purpose for a community to build on a lie. Deceiving oneself (as well as others) that what was, was not, and what was not, was. That is both foolish and dangerous. It is better to admit the truth and move-on than to continually build on a lie, that builds on other lies, in order to perpetuate a falsehood for the benefit of a class of elites here, so that they may save face.
The truth of the matter is that we were poorly managed, held back, and are in dire straights in many ways, having again another of the old-boys network running things in much the same way as did the other, in order to maintain the status quo. In order to do this they (the establishment) have to present an image of good governance so that they can carry on their game, much as what the latter did, all the while running things for the benefit of their class at our expense, while taking our community no where. Which is where their kind want to keep us, because they like it this way, for it serves their selfish purposes and interests.
The only way this cycle can be broken is for people to stand up and say enough is enough. We will live with no more lies. Praise him no more, bury the dead, and move on, is what is needed here. Society today has enough false heroes when what it really needs is a good look in the mirror, some soul searching, realization of one's potential as a community, and then an ample dose and application of some good-old-fashion common-sense and hard work.
They say truth and honesty is the best policy. For what ails this community that could not be more true. On these two principles is the bed-rock on which this community can build a brighter future for all.

Hi John,
in response to 3:53:
You have lots of good questions in there, but the only way to find out what really happened is a paper trail from one of the Councilors. But all those chicken shit, scary, Crowsnest makers, that run for Coucil in your area won't do that. When their job is to help you build a stronger Commuinity, they's rather help one Mayor destroy it. In a way you are part of the problem by staying Anonymous. With all these good questions why don't you stand up and say "My name is so-and-so and what the fuck is going on?" One dozen of you saying this and John's blog translating it, you can run that Council out of town just by asking questions, demanding answers and questioning those answers. You are the people that pay the bills and those bills include their wages. Demand some action.
Emile doesn't seem to want to answer my question...I thought it was important to CNP??
SEE BELOW..from his rumour blog..
Do you believe the rumour now Emile??

The municipality has not been contacted and we have not had any discussions with River Run owners.
Yes there has been some investor discussions in Calgary but that has nothing to do with us at this point.
Rumours are exactly that Rumours and will not warrant any further discussion until we have had discussions with someone in an official capacity.

why not contact the developer..be pro-active,,,this would b good for the municipality, correct??
I agree, why wouldnt council be pro - active? Here is an opportunity to get some much needed development, which leads to work and tax dollars. Why not step up and see if there is something that could be done.
Emile seems to have an attitude problem and most cetainly not open minded or even open to discussion.
This mayor and council seem to be able to “talk the talk but not walk the walk”, while being too full of themselves and arrogant to boot. Leadership lacks the entrepreneurial spirit, being a pencil pusher and accustomed to submitting budgetary requests that are typically approved by other tax paid bureaucrats who know absolutely nothing about actually creating wealth. Others on council have a similar background. But what is surprising is the fact we do have some businessmen on council who to-date have shown absolutely no initiative in this area as well (although having done so for themselves in the private sector?) They have shown that in their minds anyways that they are good pencil sharpeners, but not pencil makers. Are these latter individuals in it solely for the prestige and the perks? Which makes me wonder? What the hell is a councillor (Emile) doing chairing the Rum Runner’s event? Is this the best use of councillor’s time, considering a municipal employee has typically handled this event in the past? Is this precedent setting? Do these people know nothing about “delegating”?
All in all, I’m not impressed. I, like many others in this community had such high expectations for this group only to discover they lack initiative (e.g. River Run Investors/CLC) and the entrepreneurial spirit to move us ahead. Instead, they seem unable to get past the little stuff in order to deal with the bigger picture by being visionary, proactive and determined to succeed in bringing our community into the twenty-first century. Dragging and screaming if need be, but bringing us there nevertheless.
Seems we have more of the same old same old, go nowhere and do nothing mentality that we have had so much of here in the past. People who know how to get elected by telling other people what they want to hear, who then once elected go into hibernation, only to awake prior to the next election to once again repeat the cycle.

Further to what you have just said in your last comment, John, that residents here should keep in mind.
"Exploiting the pleasures of power without assuming the accompanying responsibilities is the most common means by which established elites inadvertantly destroy their own community's."
