Maybe?
Competition, or no competition? That is the question
Talking with our new Development Officer yesterday, after calling the municipal office to find out how the vote went Tuesday night in the Land Use Bylaw amendment that if passed paves the way for another liquor store in Frank (to go along with the Saloon that's already there), I was told it passed. In a recorded vote with Councillors Saindon and Saje opposed.
Our poll on this issue (see sidebar) clearly shows the majority of residents here were against... while council voted for? Another disconnect with the majority by the minority serving the interests of a small elite, so it seems?
With the passage of this amendment I guess boys will soon be coming into town, hitching up their ponies, having a few and then visiting one of the many houses of ill-repute that tend to spring up in these types of environments. Good times will soon be had by all! Just like in the old days. :-)
So what if the neighbourhood gets all shot to hell. But hey, isn't that why Thunder in the Valley was cancelled? Because a small number of establishment types complained of too much noise and revelry in their neighbourhood, during this 'one weekend'. (The Apollonians deny the Dionysians their pleasures.) Selfishness knows no bounds when it comes to the rich and well connected, especially when the well-connected is one of their own?
Anyhow, it seems like council has a double standard and is sending out mixed messages, now doesn't it? Or are they sending a clear message that Blairmore will be spared and Frank will soon be the red-light capital of the Pass? If so, how enterprising these fellows are? Maybe that's also why they've recently sent out Expressions of Interest to build a hotel in Blairmore on the old CLC site, so that they have a place to put the over-flow from Frank, on weekends. :-)
As it has already been said... "This mayor and council will be damned if they do, and damned if they don't... but damned they will be"... regarding this amendment.
We may not imagine how our lives could be more frustrating and complex - but Council can.

This is actually a good thing. It is not that I think we need another liquor store. It is because I believe in free enterprise. We should never protect one business from another.I think we have passed on many businesses over the years because we wanted to protect a local business or because it was to close to someones house or land(nimby). This attitude has hurt the CNP greatly. We have to open the doors to free enterprise and if this hurts some locals to bad.Let free enterprise rule.
Agree completely with anon @ 9:24
So do I. Wholeheartedly!

Hi John,
The part I don't understand in this post is 'competition'. In a liquer store or in a gas station today, there is no competition what-so-ever. That is all collusion, they are all obligated to sell at the same high price to make the most money possible for the government to make sure they squeeze all they can out of us for whatever their plans are. The only competition here is if you compete for fools to buy at your store. Gas and liquor are highly priced (to create a higher tax revenue) and they are a nessesity to the public. The price of gas drives you to drink that creates a job for the cop to squeeze more money out of you again, a real vicious circle. If we were all smart tomorrow, we all quit driving, we all quit drink, the cops and the politicians would have to feed themselves at the food bank. This would be a perfect world.
Bye for now.
The problem is that another liquor store in the same area does nothing economically for the community. In other words, the slices of the pie will get smaller rather than the introduction of new business that will grow the pie!!!
What bothers me is how some things get priority "out of the blue" with no explanation why or who asked for them (and don't bother asking).
Other things they claim to be concerned with are neglected.
