Crowsnest Promoter refuses to print letter to the editor

... because they already have (1) one.

10 days ago today, on August 19, I contacted the Crowsnest Promoter about a letter to the editor I had for them. Thinking they and their readers would be pleased, considering I haven't sent them one in over two years, I was rudely mistaken.

Several days later, on Friday, August 24, I received an email from them informing me they would not publish my letter to the editor due to the fact they had one (1) letter to the editor already. Yes, my reaction was what? Knowing I have seen at times several letters to the editor in one publication, I was floored by this new turn of events.

... Please understand we had a letter submitted to us before yours. It was our intent to print both this week, but as things go, that just can't be done...

So, despite having contacted them 10 days before publication of their August 29 edition, I was not able to get my letter to the editor published... as they already had 'one'?

Folks, the lesson to be learnt here is book your letter to the editor 'way ahead', I mean 'way ahead', if you want to see your letter printed in the Crowsnest Promoter.

Sad to think a local newspaper's sole and primary concern is the selling of advertising than sharing the views of what locals think on given issues important to their community, now isn't it?

In a 16 page newspaper filled with advertising (including inserts) I'm surprised they actually found room on 1/5 of one page, for their one (1) measly letter to the editor?

Crowsnest Promoter - a newspaper that informs the public... I think not! At least not the week of August 29.

When the media refuses to inform and the public no longer questions, that truly is the beginning of the end of democracy.

They obviously don't know how popular you are... or maybe they can't stand the competition? :-)

Nothing ever gets rejected because we "haven't got the space". - Pincher Creek Voice

The internet doesn't kill newspapers, newspapers kill newspapers

Yeah, anonymous, you caught me. This posting by John must have been on my mind when I wrote that bit, however, that's also been a basic principle of our site since we started.

We do however filter for content and other stuff, of course.

So, Pincher Voice, does that mean that John's Letter will run in the next weeks edition?

I don't know, haven't seen it. John's writing sometimes goes beyond what we will print in terms of language chosen, but barring that we are pretty open minded about what we will print.

We don't have a "next week's edition". We publish daily, 7 days a week.

Chris, I believe Sasha got her publications mixed up?

Sasha, no my letter will NOT be in next week's edition of the Crowsnest Promoter. I told them to stick it! ;-)

Back to you Chris. Are you suggesting your readership in the Pincher Creek area is more 'cultured' than we here in the Pass? You don't want to be starting a 'feud' now do ya, cousin? Us hillbillies don't take kindly to praire sodbusters telling us how much better they are, than what we's is. :-)

By the way, I'll have you know my readers like their news served to them raw, not all fancied up. Plain English is what my site serves up. Those who are weak-kneed with too much sensitivity go elsewhere. In fact, I'm doing my best to steer many of them your way. I prefer the hardy types who prefer their meat and potatoes served to them plain and simple, not all fancied up like a gourmet meal. ;-)

Possibly, re Sasha, but I know she's aware of our publication.
I make no claims to culture or whatever, we just do what we do, where we do it, and in a way that pleases us to do it...
Re your last statement, I know your blog works that way, and that is a large part of the charm too, even though charm is probably not the right word. I like that the new form of self publishing allows for this kind of site, not agin it, I'm fer it.
All I'm saying about our site is that it is both commercial and has a broader market both in terms of ages and sensibilities. I believe we've already shown a great willingness to tackle tough subjects that other small market endeavors shy away from.
Sometimes it even costs us in the pocketbook.
So yeah, we edit and have standards guidelines that I don't believe interrupt the freedom of sites such as yours one whit.
Keepon keeping on :)
And just in case I wasn't clear, I have no intention whatsoever to fuel any kind of "My town is better than your town" debates. That's antithetical to my, and therefore the Vocie'as, guiding principles.
I came to Alberta from Quebec, after living in a multitude of towns that hated the town down the road. it all seems too silly for words to me. We're all in thsi together.

Oh, and ps, thanks for "steering them" our way !

"My town is better than your town"

I was just ribbing ya. We don't play that game here. We all get along just fine. PC and the Pass have a great relationship. And we're going to keep it that way.

How this all started is I believe Sasha thought I had submitted a letter to your site. How she got that idea when the post clearly states the 'Crowsnest Promoter' is beyond me?

Anyhow, keep up the good work Chris. I 'enjoy' visiting your site and think your doing a great job. Best!

Thanks John. This site of yours is frequently a fascinating read.
I consider it a valuable source for understanding some of the discontent in the Pass, and enjoy "arguing back" silently in my head from time to time too. Either way, it's good for the thinking thing inside my head.
