Where's the jobs?
It seems with almost two years under their belts this Mayor and Council are all about status quo, just like the previous Mayor was for almost two decades before them. They've created absolutely no jobs, enticed no businesses or industry to setup shop here, have not yet even put together an Economic Development Committee, never mind the hiring of an Economic Development Officer. Nor have they hired a Tourism Coordinator either, as promised.
Yep, this Mayor and Council are all about status quo alright "we like things just the way they are, thank you very much". Fine, if you got money in the bank, are umpteenth generation, or if you're getting a handsome pension from one government entity or another, but for the majority of people living here who are barely scrapping by that attitude just doesn't cut it, now does it?
But then again, what do you expect from people who for the most part have had a silver spoon in their mouths most of their life's? Can't blame them, for they know not what they do, being ignorant as they are to what it's like to struggle through life... nor apparently do they give a shit.
Well, I give a shit and so do a lot of people I talk to here who feel hard-pressed by this council's attitude and misplaced priorities. After all, what have they delivered here in the last two years? Aside from cancelling a revenue and job generator, spending like drunken sailors, taxing us to death, creating a police state (Revenue police) and an over-bloated bureaucracy, while at the same time having previous councils doing the hard work regarding the CLC, needing only to put up a For Sale sign, they seem incapable of moving ahead on something that should be a piece of cake, never mind thinking outside the box with a vision and a plan, like a Hotel/Casino Convention Centre.
It seems the only job creation these guys know how to do, being the major job creators in the municipality over the last couple years, is within their own organization i.e. municipal hall. With even these jobs being given only to outsiders?
Yes, I'm looking for a job as are many others living here in this community, and I'm pissed off that there aren't any, and that this council is doing absolutely nothing about it!
If residents here would have listened to me last election when I said I wanted to be a paid full-time Mayor, not only would I have had a job, but a lot of others here would have too, by now. And it would have landed up being a whole lot cheaper by far for the taxpayer here than what we've already had to pay for all this 'good government' we've gotten so far by this Mayor, who needing his hand held by highly paid consultants neglected to mention he was going to go down this road at election time. Not very forthright and honest, now was he? Unlike moi.
Come next election, I'll be into retirement age and won't need a paid full-time job. But as a committed full-time Mayor, I can guarantee you that status quo will go out the window and creating good paying full-time jobs will be my number one priority. People here can take that to the bank!
It’s much harder to be a liberal than a conservative. Why? Because it is easier to give someone the finger than a helping hand.

beginning of a political campaign?
Could be? :-)
"Vote for me, I'll set you Free!"
Or then again, it could be a creative way of finding a job. ;-)
Know of any? 403-564-4518

I do not know what you mean by "outsiders" getting jobs. What do you mean by that. Last I noticed jobs should be available to most qualified, no matter who.
I personally don't think the job situation has changed in "forever". That is why we did not move here until we were stable.

In the last two years the municipality has been the biggest job creator with most of these jobs going to people from outside the community, including highly paid consultants.
And yes, you are right, the job situation here hasn't changed for years because I believe the powers that be don't want real change. As someone on a previous post by way of comment said, "Awesome lifestyle - everything that we need but no rush or line ups." This person forgot to mention that that comes with 'no jobs' either.

I don't think it is too much different in any small towns. I would never move to a small town expecting employment, unless you are self-employed. Which I believe more and more people are.

Granted, but I think you missed the point I was making, and that is that for over two decades we have had mayors here who actively work at keeping things the way they are.
Some of us thought things would be different with this new mayor but obviously after two years in office with diddlysquat to show for it, because it is no longer a priority for them despite at election time saying it was, and with businesses and industries closing their doors here faster than you can say WTF, it is one thing to say what you have said, it is another to see absolutely nothing but hot air coming from those in charge when new and more frequent holes in the dyke are popping out, with nothing being done to stop the leakage and plug the holes.

You could always try to market the pass as a retirement community. Being self reliant is great until another stock market crash like in 2008. Take a look at the world markets, it's going to happen again soon enough. You also need to consider younger people growing up, what reason is there to stay when they can't find work? They're parents might have money but they don't that early in life. Also consider how high property taxes are and how high the cost of housing is. Newly built houses in Pincher Creek sell for $259,000. A nice big sign next to the Co-op advertising it. Take a look around the pass at the asking prices for houses. What would you rather buy with the money you have? An older house because it's "the scenery" for 50k more and a higher property tax, or a new house for much less? Money ALWAYS goes where it's treated best.
I agree with you John, we got a clique here that sticks together to keep this place down.
I think you'll get a lot more votes this time around. Word downtown is many people are regretting who they voted for and your name gets mentioned.....and not in a negative way.
No one can ever predict an election. I guess we learned that from the polls - Wild Rose was winning by a landslide - ha ha.
You never know. But I think a good mayor should be willing to listen to people and not be really really opinionated and realize that other people might have some good ideas. Unfortunately, that seems to go by the way when people get elected.
Anon @ 7:21 PM:
I didn't say he'd win. I just repeated what I've heard a lot of being said at work, at John the Barber's, at the various coffee shops and at the stores. Talk is cheap, but I have a feeling John's fortunes might just turn......and for the better, too.
If John runs and wins then real change will have come to this municipality at long last.
Good comment David, and you are so right “Money ALWAYS goes where it's treated best.” I would also add to that “and where it is treated fairly and equally”, which has not always been the case here in the Pass for many a year with our old-school vs new-school attitude, which raised its ugly face again with the unfairness in how two delinquent taxpayers were treated recently (see Crowsnest Promoter ‘Property tax penalties appealed’) where the cases were similar, but with one getting the shaft while the other got a free ride. btw/ will be posting a blog post on this later today.

Good to hear! Now if only people organize, stick together, get behind me, and make it happen.

Always open to new ideas, feedback, and opinions, and that is why I do posts such as this one… http://blog.johnprince.ca/2012/08/wanted-ideas-for-economic-development.html

You got that right! But knowing how things work around here the powers that be will make sure to field another ‘old-school’ candidate with the hope of maintaining the status quo. I’ve already heard a couple names being floated around. One’s with money and position who having done nothing, yet feel entitled to the Mayor's chair, like all the ones we've had in the past two decades? We’ll see if that works for them again, or not?

David,I took a quick look around on MLS at Pincher Creek real estate.A Pass builder will build that house here in the CNP for about the same price. Also the other houses listed are in the same price range as in the Pass. Also if you do a little research you will find that property taxes in Pincher are actually considerably higher than in the Pass.
I do agree though that the biggest problem is jobs. People live where they work.Whether it is a retirement community or tourism or industry, it does not matter. The CNP needs jobs.
Hopefully come next year people won't need to worry about such high taxes on properties. From how our county assessor explained it, he goes back three years and calculates the average to get the value of the house. Since houses have been selling for for less as some people just want to get out, it should bring next year's values down a little bit so everyone get's a break. I still feel waiting until the next election however gives the current mayor and council too much time to do even more damage. It only takes 20% of the current CNP population to sign a petition and they have to call a new election. Waiting and hoping they don't screw anything else up before that isn't a good solution.
Why would you want an election early? We have set times for elections for a reason. Do you know how much an election costs?
Some people really need to think realistically around here and GET A GRIP. Crowsnest is very affordable and beautiful, and if you don't like it that is your choice. Don't try to affect other people.
David, If property values fell by 50% your taxes would still be about the same or even higher. Property values are only one of the two factors, the other being the mill rate. It all comes down to the municipal budget and I do not see that going down, so do not get your hopes up about property taxes falling.
Who is that anon 12:42?
An early election would probably cost less than all these highly paid consultants, and everything else that is going on that you don't know about. Bury your head in the sand and go to sleep. Someone else will run your life for you.
You insinuate, if other people leave town there is more for you and your friends. What a smart man you are. I'm impressed.

Now you've got me curious. Next time I'm in Pincher Creek I'll have to do some more research and post back.
Anon@Aug 16, 1:37PM
The math to me on that seems a little shady. This year my home was valued at $203,000, I paid about $1700 for property tax. If my home lost 50% of it's value and I still had to pay $1700 I would be screaming bloody murder. That's one huge ripoff.
I have also checked out things and Pincher Creek is very comparable to us. Taxes included.
I just read the Mayor's message. Things do sound pretty good to me. I was a little concerned about the comments around the Ratepayers Association asking for the operations from 2010. He said it will be done, but with considerable resources (meaning town people I presume). I don't know......
Anon @2:33
I just read the Mayor's newsletter too, and see that 'once again' he is big on promises, short of delivery. More pie-in-the-sky.
In addition, the two 'proposed' developments mentioned do not have shovels in the ground. In fact, a few years back when I was on council, the developer at that time (same one?) for the Cameron school made all kinds of promises and nothing happened. More of the same? The other one won't see any residential development for years to come. In the meantime, they'll set up as campground. When? A campground certainly won't be a big economic boost for the community, that's for sure. Although, we should be welcoming anything, even a campground. If it happens?
No my friend, I have to disagree with, "things do -not- sound pretty good". The truth of the matter is, from my perspective, things 'don't' sound very good at all.
