Fire fighters claim they were pushed out

Published on Oct 17, 2012 by globalnewslethbridge

Community members in the Crowsnest Pass are taking matters into their own hands over the termination of a veteran fire chief. The majority of the area's fire personnel turned in their in protest of the municipality's decision to let go of longtime Blairmore chief Jamie Margatek.

The price one pays for pursuing any profession or calling is an intimate knowledge of its ugly side.

"up to 42 members"

Is that how many they've talked to or how many have "re-applied" or how many are back as "employees"?

It is my understanding this includes members from the Rescue squad who are not firefighters

There are 14 members in the Rescue Squad who are highly trained in their profession but are not firefighters who have a much different specialized skill set from what our Rescue people have... and vice versa.

Please. It isn't a profession. These guys volunteer and their services are greatly appreciated, but at what point will they be held accountable for abadoning their community when the community needed them the greatest. They should have stepped up and lead by example with tack and diplomacy, not taken their ball and ran home.

You must be new to the pass. This is not about taking their ball and going home, it is about letting the council know who is in control. Why else would they collectively not bring the fire engines to the parade for the kids and leave the community with limited fire protection?
I guess they showed council a thing or two but revealed quite a bit about themselves in the process.

6:18 - Unfortunately, our Mayor is not much for delegations and dialogue, just ask any group which tired to speak with council. He has brought with him a big city vetting process, committees and reports. This is not how a small community runs, he is just now finding out. The firemen are not the first group, board, or association that they are trying to bring under so called “control.” This simply means more work for the bureaucrats whom we can’t afford on our declining tax base. Have you looked at the numbers?

Anon 6:18. It is not a profession, but a passion. Who else whould train for years and show up when your vehicle is upside down in the river... and for what amounts to a minimum wage? These guys deseved their shiny new truck as it was cost effective. And finally, Darryl Ferguson... Thank-you for all you have done,(well deserving of much more than a plaque). You are one of our number one volunteers! Please muster some strenght to see this through for a few months. You may leave a bigger mark.

So, looks like some people think the fireman should have taken the high road.To have the fireman go in the parade and stay on duty after one of their own was dismissed. To paint the fireman as the bad guys is just wrong.
The facts are Council Defered TITV.This of course was a LIE,they never had the intent to bring it back. Then council fired a volunteer of over 30 years.Normally there would be a process before someone gets terminated, like letters of disipline and warnings. So then the fireman react the ONLY way they can. Just like in a fire they have each others backs. They send a message to council, saying enough is enough.Council forced the fireman to make this decision. I think it is all part of councils plan.
On a different note, usually politicians try and work with the people because they know that if they do not they will not be re elected. My guess is that at least 5 of these guys will NOT run again. So now we are stuck with there monster egos for 1 more year. How much more damage can they do.

It seems as if the firemen were trying to control, control. Regarding TITV and firing of the fire chief.
They are important, but I don't think they should be able to call the shots as apparently has been the case for many years. I think they all did the community a disservice by all quitting. Kind of looks as if it is backfiring. Just want things back to normal - whatever they do.

ANON 9:28 The fireman are not trying to "call the shots" now and they have never had that power.I think a council that can not work with its volunteers is 100% to blame. As for backfiring, would you say that councils plan is going along smoothly or are petitions with over 20% of the populations signatures asking for help normal?
You of course would prefer the fireman to do nothing, the ratepayers to do nothing and allow council to do whatever they want. This is a democracy!!

Imagine a councillor asks the financial officer a simple question: “how much are we spending on the volunteer fire department?” The financial officer says: “I don’t have this information with me.” Now, can any person who has ever tried to balance the family check book think this is normal? If this is not the starting point for the restructuring of the fire department, what is? Was the council ever presented with two sides of an argument, or were they spoon fed information on the need to know basis? If anyone thinks that the restructuring is progressing as planned, they are not walking the same streets as the rest of us. But we do have to give our council credit for something they have done for us: in the 24 years I have been here I have never seen our community this united, from Passburg to Sentinel.
