The Crowsnest Pass.. the circus without a tent.

Somebody needs to ALSO bring in a specialist to prove that they were properly stored and handled and make a report on that!

This latest twist proves that common sense has vacated our municipal office. Was there no better way to deal with this? The council cancels Thunder in the Valley, the firemen can't use the fireworks which were bought for the event. These fireworks were bought with municipal cooperation. Blairmore fire chief gets fired, firemen walk, and no one is happy. Town office needs a better explanation to justify their heavy handed action to the unhappy voters, so they call the police on their own volunteers. If this is supposed to make them look better -they are not thinking. They are grasping, and when this is all settled, we are all going be stuck with huge legal bills. This is all about taxes. What did they budget for lawyers in the upcoming budget? This is why the petition is so important.

might I suggest they choose a public location, and oh maybe a weekend in summer for the destruction. The noise would be like a thunder in this valley,
...just saying...

"Crowsnest Pass RCMP are advising that the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit has been requested" By whom?

"Transportation and destruction of the fireworks and any investigation into the matter will be managed by the Explosive Regulatory Division of Canada." Says who? Myron?

Did the Pincher Voice bother asking the Explosive Regulatory Division if they know anything about this?

I wright this from a safe location in a hotel room in Sparwood. I say that we just hose the stuff down and save ourselves a whole lot of money. Oh wait.. we have to hire someone to man the firehose? Wouldn't it be nice to just end this whole gong show?

And if there is an investigation by the Explosive Regulatory Division they will be pointing the finger at the owners of the property and the employers of the "employees" working there.

Can the owners/employers (Council) claim they exercised "due diligence"?

Obviously not, since they knew perfectly well that fireworks were stored there prior to TiTV.

This stuff is no different from the fireworks in Handimart - just bigger "Roman Candles" etc., but the same chemicals.

At worst the 125 kilogram limit for storage has been exceeded by 50%.

There is no such thing as "High Explosive Fireworks".

(According to my internet researches - maybe some pyrotechnicians or blasters can correct me)

Regarding the anonymous comment directed at the PC Voice. No we didn't. We got an RCMP press release late in the day, after business hours for any government agencies btw, and as we do with RCMP press releases related to the region, we posted it.

I will set my alarm to get to the Blairmore Fire Hall at 7:00 AM with my camera.

WOW! So the firemen were conspiring to blow up the Crowsnest Pass? Thank the good lord for our intelligent counselors who knew to act quickly and bring in more exports to keep us safe!

Anyone know a dollar value of these fireworks? Good thing we are such a wealthy community and can afford to send our fundraising dollars up in smoke!

Is destoying them our only option?
We were assured how many times that Thunder in the Valley was only” deferred” Here is a long shot, but how about we use those fireworks (that we all donated money towards) for next year’s Thunder in the Valley? No that would be stupid, lets bring in the exports and blow them fire works up.

It’s all about safety folks!

The Administration and Mayor have stooped to an all time low. They should be ashamed of themselves, but instead I'm sure they are still laughing out loud in their office at the fireman. I feel very bad for all the Municipal subordinates who have to work under the gag order of administration. CAO must GO!

Getting real tired of this BS, when will it end.
Remember when council gave the fireman hell for not following the provincial fireworks act(donna Tona, I am unsure what the exact details were) and the fireman argued that they were regulated by the federal government and were doing everything by the book.
Now the Municapality is saying that the fireworks were not stored correctly. But at the Ratepayers meeting we were told that the fireworks were stored correctly. It seems to me that admin could not get in there fast enough to twist the knife a little more.
What if these fireworks were stored correctly? It is not like council has always been right.Who so quickly became an expert on fireworks storage?
Anyone who thinks the hate that is out there now will heal in a short period is sadly mistaken.I have never seen a group of volunteers get punished so badly, and now the swimming pool board also.SAD, SAD, SAD

Some questions for us taxpayers. Wasn’t there a more sensible way to address the issue of the leftover fireworks, which would have been gone, had the council had not cancelled the Thunder in the Valley? Was the decision to call the police on our volunteers discussed with full council? Or, was this the work of only couple of people? Do we now have an expensive municipal lawyer on full retainer, among all the other consultants who got us to this point? If we keep generating so many legal issues, we may soon need a full legal department with a director, just like in a big city. Do we budget adequately for all the legal work which we are currently generating here? How much does it cost to bring the bomb disposal unit from wherever they come from, and is this going to be added to our policing cost? And how would we feel if there was a real emergency in the city while they were here? Isn’t there a better way to spend tax dollars if we are concerned with public safety? There is no cross walk in front of the High School.

"Great foto-op here. I picture lots of yellow tape and blast suits with helmuts."
Yeah, and they had a front end loader and some kind of specialized equipment, maybe a bomb disposal robot?

Oh, wait ... that's just a paving crew.
:^)

There were two TV crews. Nothing happening, they were reduced to interviewing dog walkers.

Eventually a couple of RCMP showed up in a pickup. They had to move it around back because of the paving.

One of the TV crews left.

I left.

The circus without a tent... a full tent of empty head creating problem for themself trying to hurt someone else. Smart like stick....who care if store properly or not except the experts .18 years with no problems is a excellent RECORD

Anonymous said...

Well, I for one care that explosives are stores properly. What person in there right mind would not?

The town is now insane.... Just like you, John.

I lived close to the Blairmore Fire Department for the last 25 years. I never had a problem with the way they stored the fireworks. I watched them build a building that was up to Federal standards. Council in the pass never had a problem so why do this one?

Anonymous said...

Our current council just can't stop shooting itself in the foot, or Is it only one guy who is doing all the shooting?

Anonymous said...

So disappointed in yet another decision by our wise and mighty dictatorship. If council wasn't so wasteful with our money they could have at least used these explosives for their gopher control program. Duh!

Crowsnest Pass is not resistant to change; Crowsnest Pass is resistant to foolishness. And from what I see on this blog, we have a pretty good sense of humor.

Has anyone even considered here that thats why Margetak was fired, for his stockpiling fireworks. They can only be stored for fourteen days never mind a whole year. Also John good for you for writing about the other side of the coin. If you are going to run in the next election, be more positive instead of always negative. Did you ever here the saying "You catch more bees with honey than vinegar" something to think about.

Anon 8:04 "They can only be stored for fourteen days never mind a whole year" Would you mind backing up this statement with some proof.

Anonymous said...

It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Why would they buy fireworks this year knowing there will be no thunder?

I hear the RCMP have added a surprise event to their Regimental Charity Ball.
