Letter received from Minister: "Up yours Ratepayers"
Just received an email from one of my readers who shared with me the reply he received from Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths regarding his written complaint to him. I still have not received mine but I imagine it will be the same identical form letter reply my friend (who wishes to remain anonymous) here received.
The following is an excerpt from that letter. To read the letter in its entirety go here.
... I respect the work that the Crowsnest Pass council and administration has done in bringing forward the Community Strategic Action Plan 2012 - 2014, and the work they are doing in the review of the Fire Services Master Plan. I will continue to support their efforts to carry out their legislated responsibilities.
The Crowsnest Ratepayers Association plans on delivering their recently completed petition to the Minister tomorrow. Based on the reply received above it looks like they have already gotten their answer, even before they have had a chance to hand-deliver their petition? :-(
Not looking good! It seems the residents of this community are in for a long hard road and uphill battle ahead.
In politics, absurdity is not a handicap.

Seriously, what did you expect.
Council hasn't done anything illegal.
The minister isn't going to do anything.
Can't wait for the next election campaign promises and slogans to start. How many weeks?
Maybe the ratepayers should get a petition to get rid of Doug Griffiths.
Thanks for always keeping us up to date with things John. I know it takes a lot of time.
Looks like its time to pitter patter up the ladder!!!! Don't stop at Doug Griffiths...go right to the Premier!
Easier than people think!
I think it is very easy for Griffith to reply to a few emails saying he will not intervene. That is probably policy.Imagine if he had to do a full investagation every time he got an email about someone complaining about a council. But he can not ignore a petition with over 40% of the population having signed it. The province has rules that say they need at least 20% of the population to sign.He will have no choice but to at least investigate and quite possibly intervene. If this is not the case then there is something very wrong with the system.
The reply is a standard form letter, just isert the Crowsnest Pass in the heading. This council has done nothing illegal. The importance of the petition is more significant locally tha any impact it may have on the minister. Next time there is a townhal lecture, if there is another one, everyone In the audience will know: " the emperor has no clothes." Any improvment in our situation will have to wait until the election.
No, I think he was very very clear.
Can you imagine if everyone acted like us; they would be very busy. Plus it keeps repeating...

You're welcome. And thanks! :-)

Point well taken. I agree, a petition with over 2400 signatures can't be so easily dismissed as with a few dozen emails.
JP
investigate what? people not agreeing with councils decisions? Get over it. I am sure Mr. Griffiths got more important issues to deal.
I am sure he does however this also must be given attention as dictators that wreck a small town cannot be able to carry on spending money uncontrolably and hiring individuals and firing volunteers and charging individuals that disagree with him the mayor and council should have understood that being given this power was to carry out the voice of the people of the town not their own agenda
I think only people that voted in the last election should be able to sign the petition.
Speechless....
