Latest news from CTV on Crowsnest Ratepayers Association petition.

The main dangers in this life are the people who want to change everything - or nothing.

Well, good for them I guess. They have really managed to put a negative aspect to the CNP. I think they have done much more damage than the council actually. We'll see what happens, probably nothing in the end. But maybe one of them will end up with a council job but I doubt it.

Like it or not the fact remains that over two thousand people have declared that they are not happy, for whatever reasons, with what is happening in the CNP. You simply can't ignore this. Mayor and council seen early on that there was concern among citizens about decisions that were being made and chose to take an offensive style approach to anybody who questioned there decisions. There definetly seems to be more than a hint of arrogance and a lack of respect directed towards unbelievers. Looking at the whole thing I find it understandable to see the current state of things. Sad, but true.

I don't agree with what the Ratepayers are doing, in regards to this petition, but I guess it's their prerogative. Telling the whole world about what they think is wrong in Crowsnest Pass isn't helpful at all. It definitely puts a negative aspect to Crowsnest Pass, when people outside the community watch this on TV. Do the Ratepayers think the coverage by outside media will influence the provincial government in some way? I doubt it. If you really want change (again), you will have to wait until the upcoming election.

Anon, Oct 31 2:14 PM: do you really think that the issue here is that outsiders may look upon us in a negative light and what - not visit here or move here? Really.

Hi John,
This does not only help the Pass it helps all the small communities across the country. Setting an example of people standing up for their community is a good thing!

When you get elected as mayor it will not be because you are intelligent, its just because you got more votes. It's like a beauty pageant, you have blond hair and big boobs. :-)

TANSTAAFL: "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch"

We now have dangling in front of us compliments of the mayor & council a bright shiny new carrot in the form of a hotel/truck stop/restaurant, BUT we have to ask ourselves, what will be the cost to the municipality & its residents? Yes, we do need new businesses, etc for the tax base & employment but has this been thought out properly?

By my calculations, if the complex is put into place following the mayor’s plan & other suggestions, it will cost the community, Coleman in particular approx 12 businesses & countless jobs.

I can hear the voices now; “What the heck are you babbling about!!!” Well, bear with me & see if my thoughts bear fruit.

Fact: the mayor has announced the coming of the complex at the site of the old CLC.

Fact: the mayor has approached the premier about the supposed congestion through the summer in especially in Coleman & is advocating a re-alignment of Highway 3. Proposed route has been from west Blairmore, south of Coleman through the old mine property & Willow Dr to possibly near the Devon facility.

Hearsay but I have heard it several times now: some residents in the Willow Dr area have discovered that caveats have been placed on their properties by the municipality. (Anyone who confirm or disprove this, please post)

Now; if the complex is built & the highway rerouted to provide better traffic flow, it would eliminate Coleman completely. Let’s face reality, no-one pulls off the highway for any distance just for gas or food. When we are traveling, we want the fastest in & out possible. What happens to the 3 gas stations, 2 motels & other eateries in Coleman? With only local traffic & occasional through traffic, these businesses will fade away.

Now; the hard questions.
-Is it only a coincidence that the mayor has brought up the traffic in Coleman at the same time that the hotel made the news? (The real congestion is only 3-4 days a summer & most of us locals know how to get around it)
-Is it only a coincidence that the businesses affected in Coleman are a direct competition to the new proposed complex?
-Is it only a coincidence that the mayor & council would hand over such a gravy train to outside interests without expecting some sort of return?
-Is it possible that the so-called outside investors have a very direct local interest?

As I said at the beginning, TANSTAAL - "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch"
All those who are all hot & giggly over something such as this complex should really look at all angles & underlying issues before jumping on the bandwagon. That’s why we are in this situation now, fast promises by a group who wanted to be elected & are now leading us down the garden path!

Caveat Emptor! Lets not buy another pig in a poke!

Doomsayer, You make some points but they are all very weak.Reality is that sooner or later that highway through Coleman will be moved. And it must be moved. Will this hurt those Coleman businesses, yes. Will coleman die because of it, no. As you remember the highway once went through Bellevue and Blairmore, and they are still there.
To think that this new hotel and the changing of the route of the highway in the near term is absurd. The mayor can yap all he wants about the highway being changed but reality is probably 15 to 20 years before it happens.(maybe the Mayor can send letters to the Premier every month to speed things up,lol).

The Mayor claims he and his council have a 'mandate' to make change. Where exactly does he feel this 'mandate' came from, and who gave it them?
