Municipality going to the dogs... and cats
I hate continually being the bearer of bad news but here again I must do my duty in reporting that our community is once again literally going to the cats... and dogs, so to speak, with the on-going, never-ending crisis between those presently running our town office and our local S.P.C.A.
In this week's Pass Herald, Lindsay Goss does a story here on this on-going confrontation.
Now, I'm not privy to all the details on why a mutually acceptable agreement cannot be reached? I do know that the crux of the problem from what I understand is that the municipality owns the land on which the building owned by the S.P.C.A. sits, and there apparently is the problem.
As owners of the land, the municipality feels they can dictate new ways of doing things to those who feel they have managed things quite well for many a year, thank you very much!
Once again, it seems, our new administration with the backing of council feel the "new improved variety" is the best and the patient should learn to swallow it whether they like it or not. Why must everything be a confrontation with these guys? Why must everything change for what seems like change for changes sake only? Is there nothing that can be left untouched by them? They're like a virus that keeps spreading, infecting everything, destroying healthy tissue leaving death and destruction in their wake. If things work well, why not leave them as they are?
On the other hand, if there are serious problems that most of us don't know about then please enlighten us as to what they are? If not, then leave well-enough alone. Or else we may soon find ourselves paying big bucks for psychiatric bills for our poor little fluffy animal friends who are presently suffering from all this undue stress and distress. We might even have to get one for Lee soon, as she has been looking a little frazzled lately. :-0 :-)
Seriously, settle this matter!

Just read your blog on dogs and cats. Yes not only are we at the SPCA a bit frazzled but so are many people who are missing their dogs and now do not know where to call. As a matter of fact the owner of the lost puppy just called the SPCA and we were able to tell him where it was. For years we had an animal control officer who handled complaints picked up dogs brought them to the shelter fed and cleaned the impounded dogs and then released them to the owners .We all worked amiably together. When we inherited this new administration and the animal control contract ran out the administration decided not to renew the animal control officers contract. I asked why , because we started having problems right from the start, and was told that they{ the administraters}could not justify to the RATEPAYERS having 2 peace officers and an animal control officer. The 2 PEACE Officers would be doing Animal control now. Nobody knew where to get hold of anyone to either make complaints or ask about lost and found animals. We at the SPCA recieved many calls and tried to connect them to the peace off. who were busy doing the things they were hired to do . Animal Control is a fulltime job The Spca found we were doing more Animal control all the time. We complained to the administrators and they then offered an agreement for us to act as Poundkeepers . As mentioned in Johns blog there is also a dispute over the addition the SPCA built and paid for after we were given permission from the previous councel who voted to let us have the land unanimously to build on. The agreement they wanted us to sign would have been like signing the farm away. It would have given them complete control of the building and how things were run. The Carrot they dangled was to give us $11660.00 a month For food cleaning, cleaning supplies exstensive paperwork accounting fees A person also had to be on call 7 dys a week 24 hors a day. Thrown in to make it look good were Veterinary Expenses 0f $12000 a year WHICH would never be used for the impounded dogs. 99% are heathy when they come in Fluff money. They offered to pay for the phone and advertising We pay our own phone and advertising . The only thing the Municipalty pays are the utilities. They have to keep their room heated too, and Marion INSISTED on paying the insurance, now I know why I hope you are still with me .because now we get to the nitty gritty. The Public is not happy not knowing where to go with animal problems, The Peace Officers are not happy to do Animal control That is not what they were hired to do. We are not happy because we are caught in the middle. With all the alleged money the administration wants to pay for a Poundkeeper, WOULD it not have been cheaper and made everyone happy and things run smooth, again, it certainly would have made more sense if they would have kept their ANIMAL CONTROl OFFICER? BUT they could not justify it to the RATEPAYERS. SO who is to blame for the total CHAOS that has resulted from this misguided decision. How did they manage to justify all this money for a Poundkeeper to the Ratepayers.? YES we are frazzled all this is totally not necessary Lee
This need for control is just beyond pale. Is there a group left which did not have the proverbial “stick stuck” into its collective eye? This will not stop until October.
Lee thanks for your informtion. Rest assured when this administration and council implode, we will make it right again.
They seem to have a real "Scorched Earth" policy, but we will rebuild all they have torn apart
With all the $ the logo costs and will keep costing, counting the changes to stationay and vehicles they could have paid an animal control officer for at least 3 years But a logo wine and cheese, are more important to this Mayer and Council than the homeless and lost animals in this community. What a bunch of egomaniacs.
9.39 This is the attitude for the day. Rebuilt what the MARE destroyed with a new COUNCIL is the way to go. And bravo to you Lee for having the gall to tell it the way it is.
Lee made a mistake on the money offer for each month. Thank you for making me aware of this. The right amount offered each month is 1166.oo ooops Lee
The SPCA doesn't own the building, the town does. The SPCA is so poorly managed I'm surprised they are able to even open the doors. No standards at all. Just try and adopt an animal from them and you will see.
